OUR EMERALDS

Garaude’s legacy has always been intertwined with emeralds. Starting with the first stone discovered in Bahia by founder François Garaude, who became an expert in the field. Today, we continue this journey by sourcing emeralds directly from mines in Colombia and Zambia, ensuring full traceability from mine to market. Each emerald, with its unique ‘garden’ of inclusions formed millions of years ago, tells a story of its history and natural origins.
ORIGIN

Located in lush green mountainous department of Boyacá, FURA’s Coscuez emerald mine covers an area of 46 hectares and is about 228 kilometers in north from capital city of Bogotá. The Coscuez Mine is historically one of the world’s most significant emerald mines, having been in operation for over 400 years and has produced some of Colombia’s finest emeralds.
Colombia’s Muzo district actually encompasses several mines, of which two are currently major producers: Muzo and Coscuez. The two mines are only 10 km apart. Although smaller than Muzo, the Coscuez mine has for more than 400 years produced some of the best emeralds from the Muzo region, at times in quantities that have even surpassed the Muzo mine. In the mid 1980’s the production from Chivor region started depleting while that from the Coscuez mine accelerated rapidly.

Located in the southern part of Zambia’s copper belt, this open-pit mine lies in the centre of a mineral-rich province called the Ndola Rural Emerald Restricted Area.
Following the liberalisation of mining in the early 1990s, Zambia has become one of the most valuable emerald sources in the world.
Since acquiring the Kagem mine in 2008, in partnership with the Government of the Republic of Zambia through the Industrial Development Corporation (IDC), Gemfields’ investment has stabilised and standardised the supply of emeralds, transforming the operation and the communities that surround it.
